Table Layout Pattern Guidelines

The modal used to validate which machines were part of the query and which intentionally weren’t needed to be redesigned from the old user interface look.

Case Study

BACKGROUND

We had a team of designers working on the same application, and the designers were working with a team of product managers with different visions. The table was the most common component for presenting data, but designers were presenting the information and actions in tables in different ways. I was asked to create table guidelines to create a consistent pattern to use for presention of information and actions.

MY PROCESS

I made an inventory of all the various ways that information and actions was presented in the tables. I worked with the pattern designers and design management to create a list of standards and gain approval. During this time, I was documenting all the possible ways to present information, along with some don’ts.

SOLUTION

The table guidelines is still used frequently as the source of truth of how to present information. It is a great training resource for new designers. I update it from time to time when a new item needs to be documented.

Sample guidelines

These are just a few of the guidelines that I wrote in the document.
